
Fern Gavelek's background as a veteran journalist, editor and public relations professional helps her craft copy that editors choose to use. A native of Indiana, she's been writing about Hawaii's tourism industry since 1988, covering its many businesses and events. More recently, she has also focused on agricultureā creating articles, columns, press releases and photos appearing in statewide magazines. She leads Hafner Creative Communications with publicity campaigns for Mealani's Taste of the Hawaiian Range.
Community involvement is important to Fern and she has been volunteer publicist for Hulihe'e Palace since 2004 and co-chair of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce's Marketing Committee since 2006. As a member of St. Michael's Heritage Committee, she wrote the 2009 book "North Kona's Catholic Heritage...remembered." A 20-year resident of Holualoa, Fern has also been on the board of Kai Opua Canoe Club and the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club and received a Governor's Commendation in 1991 for dedicated service to Hawaii's foster children.
