Customize your Facebook profile image to increase visitor engagement.

Many businesses either forget or don’t know how to brand one of their key marketing components—their Facebook business page.

Start with a standard profile image.

You may be under the impression that you can only insert your logo or a professional photo. But there’s actually quite a bit of space that you can work with—up to 180 pixels wide by 540 pixels high. Have your design team try combining both of them together within a color panel. Or add a key message.

Facebook profile imageRemember to keep brand continuity with your other marketing pieces. Your designer should use your brand colors, images and messaging.

Also keep in mind what you’d like to have appear in the thumbnail image. It can only be adjusted from top to bottom. Ideally you want it to be recognizable and so the size may need to be larger than you might normally use. There may be some trial and error before all the elements are positioned properly.

Change is good.

Facebook is a social platform that people visit frequently. Having new and interesting content is what keeps your audience coming back. Aside from your company's regular posts, consider some options for the profile image.

Think about strategies that will build your brand. Try things that will increase visitor engagement. Consider a fan page sweepstakes to increase likes. Promote a weekly special. Highlight company news. Incorporate these messages and graphics in the profile image.

Not all strategies fit your brand but do try different approaches from time to time and see what people respond to the most.

Keep it simple and consistent.

If you have a call-to-action button on your website, incorporate the same graphics into your profile image and direct them to an action or tab on your Facebook business page. A landing page on your site can be converted to a page in Facebook. Use inexpensive sweepstakes software where you can add your custom images and text.

Easy as 1-2-3-4.

  1. Create your new graphics in a photo program measuring 180 pixels wide and no more than 540 pixels high
  2. Roll over your existing profile photo and click the CHANGE PICTURE link.
  3. Click CHOOSE FILE, find it on your computer and select.
  4. Once uploaded just click EDIT THUMBNAIL to select the portion of the image you want to appear in the thumbnail version.

And you are all set!
